Despite: Mặc dù
Despite thường được sử dụng để chỉ sự bất chấp hoặc không quan tâm đến một điều gì đó.
Ví dụ:
- Despite the heavy rain, they continued their outdoor picnic. (Mặc dù trời mưa to, họ vẫn tiếp tục buổi dã ngoại ngoài trời.)

Cấu trúc Though, Although và Even Though
Though/Although/Even Though + S + V, S + V
Cách dùng: Cấu trúc này có thể đứng đầu câu hoặc giữa câu. Trong trường hợp đứng đầu câu, cần phải có dấu phẩy ở giữa 2 vế.
Ví dụ:
- Though he was tired, he kept working late into the night. (Mặc dù anh ấy mệt mỏi, anh ấy vẫn làm việc đến khuya.)
- They decided to go for a walk, although it was raining. (Họ quyết định đi dạo, mặc dù trời đang mưa.)

Cấu trúc Despite, In spite of
In spite of có cấu trúc giống như Despite như sau:
- In spite of + noun/ noun phrase
- In spite of + gerund (V-ing)
- In spite of + wh-phrases
- In spite of + the fact that + clause
Ví dụ:
- In spite of the heavy traffic, they arrived on time. (Mặc dù có kẹt xe, họ đến đúng giờ.)
- In spite of working late, she was still energetic. (Mặc dù làm việc muộn, cô ấy vẫn còn đầy năng lượng.)
- In spite of how difficult it was, they managed to complete the project. (Dù nhiệm vụ khó khăn đến đâu, họ đã hoàn thành được.)

Khi sử dụng cấu trúc despite, in spite of, bạn cần lưu ý 3 điểm sau:
- Cả despite, in spite of đều có thể được dùng với the fact that
- Các cấu trúc câu Despite, In spite of, Though, Although và Even Though đều có thể đứng đầu câu hoặc giữa câu.
- Nếu các Despite, In spite of, Though, Although và Even Though đứng đầu câu thì giữa 2 vế phải có dấu phẩy.
Cách chuyển đổi cấu trúc Though và Despite trong câu
Nếu chủ ngữ là: N + Be + Adj thì đưa tính từ đặt trước danh từ và bỏ động từ to be.
- Though the room was small, it felt cozy. –> Despite the smallness of the room, it felt cozy.
- Though the movie was old, it was still popular. –> Despite the age of the movie, it was still popular.
- Though the journey was long, they enjoyed it. –> Despite the length of the journey, they enjoyed it.
Nếu 2 mệnh đề có chung chủ ngữ thì bỏ chủ ngữ, động từ thêm “-ing”.
- Though he had a lot of work to do, he managed to finish early. –> Despite having a lot of work to do, he managed to finish early.
- Though she was tired, she continued working on her project. –> Despite being tired, she continued working on her project.
- Though it was raining, they decided to go for a picnic. –> Despite the rain, they decided to go for a picnic.
Nếu mệnh đề là: Đại từ + Be + Tính từ thì đổi đại từ thành đại từ sở hữu, đổi tính từ thành danh từ và lược bỏ to be.
- Though it was difficult, she managed to complete the task. –> Despite its difficulty, she managed to complete the task.
- Though it is expensive, the car is worth the price. –> Despite its expense, the car is worth the price.
- Though it was crowded, the party was enjoyable. –> Despite its crowdedness, the party was enjoyable.
